EAL
At St Peter’s we are very fortunate to have a diverse school community, with families representing a wide range of languages and cultures from across the globe. Each classroom is enriched by students who bring a variety of languages from their homes. We actively celebrate this diversity and provide frequent opportunities for students to share their languages and cultural experiences, fostering an inclusive and globally minded environment within our school.
We work closely with the Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) to provide training and support for both children and families as needed. Our goal is to ensure that every child has access to a broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum. We believe that English is best learned through engaging with the curriculum, and we encourage our EAL (English as an Additional Language) students to fully participate in all learning opportunities. EAL learners thrive when they are educated alongside their peers in a whole-school setting.
The supportive structure, pastoral care, and inclusive ethos of our school help EAL children integrate smoothly, while also valuing and celebrating diversity. We view bilingualism as a positive and enriching asset, contributing to both personal growth and a broader global perspective.
The term “EAL” is used to describe a diverse and heterogeneous group of learners who speak English as an Additional Language. In England, such learners are defined as those who have been ‘exposed to a language at home that is known or believed to be other than English’ (Department for Education, 2019).
