Design & Technology

'Good buildings come from good people, and all problems are solved by good design.' - Stephen Gardiner

An essential part of our focus as a Catholic school is on the importance of the development of the whole child. Design and Technology is central to this and we will seek to inspire all pupils in making and designing quality products.  We aim to instil an appreciation and understanding of how good design and skills in technology are highly valued and necessary in our society. This is a vital part of developing our pupils’ creativity, inspiring future careers and enriching their childhood. Children will learn that throughout history and explicitly in modern day society, all objects have been and still are, designed for a purpose. Also, that good design comes from a process which is as important as the finished product. Pupils will learn that technology and design are intertwined and they will learn the technical skills needed to develop and improve their work.

Design and Technology is an intrinsic part of a child’s education, where the development of manual dexterity, problem solving, use of materials and the techniques of making are all essential in the development of a child.  At St Peter’s we intend to provide a high-quality design and technology education that will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own products for purpose.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of the technical aspects of design and technology. They should also know how design and technology both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
